Ed. Note: What better way to close out this…interesting year than to give your time and talents to help your fellow Memphians? Volunteer Odyssey has put together this list of local groups that need your help this month.

Grit, grind, and give this month. As Memphians, we show our city we care every day by standing up for it. We support our communities by continuing to invest our time and money in them. We don’t bluff—but we do give back, and our city needs us now more than ever.

There are lots of ways to show Memphis love, and we have ten more for you. Check out our suggestions below or view a complete list of volunteer opportunities at http://serve.volunteerodyssey.com.

Volunteering In Memphis: Ways to Volunteer

1. Catholic Charities of West Tennessee, Food Box Packing (Dec. 3rd, 1:00-3:00pm) and Mobile Food Pantry (Mon-Thurs, 8:30-11:00am)

Assist CCWTN in serving neighbors experiencing hunger and homelessness. They have opportunities every week day, like packing food boxes for their mobile food pantry or assisting with their drive-through pantry. See all events and find one that fits your schedule here!

2. Memphis Botanic Garden Monthly Weed Wrangle, December 5th, 9:00am-12:00pm

Join the garden in their monthly weed wrangle as they work towards a goal of removing invasive plants to revert the area back to a native woodland. This area of the garden boasts over 50 different species of native trees and dozens of other species of native shrubs, vines, and perennials all collected within a 4-acre plot. The presence of exotic and invasive plants limits the growth potential of native plants, who compete for the same resources. Register here!

3. Mid-South Toys for Tots Warehouse Volunteer, December 5th, 8:00am-12:00pm and 12:00-3:00pm.

Mid-South Toys for Tots is preparing bundles of toys for hundreds of families across the MidSouth. You can help by volunteering in their warehouse sorting and bundling toys every weekend through the end of December. Find a date that works for you here!

4. Cherokee Health Systems Community COVID-19 Testing, December 8th, 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00-3:00pm

Give back to two Memphis Communities as Cherokee Health Systems offers COVID-19 testing to anyone who needs it. Volunteers are needed to assist with paperwork, packing swab kits, taking information, and other tasks to ensure the drive-through testing runs smoothly and safely. Protective gear will be worn at all times. Register for your shift here!

5. Memphis Botanic Garden Holiday Wonders Event, December 11th, 4:00-9:00pm

Volunteers will help create a fun holiday environment! They will assist with scanning tickets, running activities, directing guests to where they need to go, and other tasks as needed. This will be a great way to spread some holiday cheer while also helping out! Festive clothes are welcome- just be sure to dress warmly as this event is outdoors! Volunteers will be required to abide by all city, state, and federal guidelines on masks and social distancing. Sign up to spread holiday cheer here!

6. Catholic Charities of West Tennessee, Homeless Outreach, December 14th, 8:00-10:00am

Due to COVID-19 risks, we cannot allow many individuals to come shop for themselves, though they still need these vital supplies. To help with this, CCWTN needs volunteers who can help distribute food, clothing, and hygiene items to our most vulnerable neighbors. Clients will provide their needs and sizing information allowing the volunteer to put together a bag for them. We ask that volunteers bring their own face covering/mask. Sign up here!

7. Memphis Tilth, St. Paul Garden, Every Wednesday, 9:00-12:00pm and Saturday, 9:00-12:00pm and 1:00-5:00pm.

Join Memphis Tilth in their mission of cultivating collective action for an economically sustainable, socially equitable, and environmentally sound local food system. You can join in their work at the St. Paul Garden as you clean, water, and plant in the garden. This is a wonderful opportunity to practice a hobby you love or learn a new skill as you help the community have access to healthful foods. Volunteers will need to attend a virtual orientation prior to their first shift to learn more about the mission and operations of Memphis Tilth. Mark your calendar and sign up for your shift here!

8. MIFA Christmas Day Delivery, December 25th

Join MIFA in a holiday tradition of 35 years where volunteers deliver a hot meal and a gift bag to more than 800 senior clients on Christmas morning. This year’s event will feature outdoor meal pick-up and other COVID-19 safety measures. Space is limited so sign-up today. Register using the link and you will be contacted to complete your application process.

Register for your spot here!

9. St. Vincent de Paul Care Kits, remote

Build care kits for neighbors experiencing hunger and homelessness served daily by the St. Vincent de Paul food mission. For a list of products to donate and drop-off information, email dannon@volunteerodyssey.com.

10. St. Vincent de Paul donation drive, remote

Donate gloves, hats, socks, and other accessories for the cold to St. Vincent de Paul for neighbors experiencing homelessness. The winter months are especially hard for folks who have limited access to warm places and warm clothes. Pick up a few products the next time you are at the store and email gloria.hyden.svdp@gmail.com to arrange a drop-off time.
